How everything hooks up together
Use either cable option in the same overall setup. Only the 3.5 mm plug construction changes; the device, UGREEN DAC adapter, red and black leads and crocodile clips are used in the same sequence.
Phone or tablet
Open GeoVue on the recording device and connect through its USB-C port.
UGREEN DAC adapter
Plug the UGREEN USB-C adapter into the device. Confirm that the adapter contains a DAC chip.
Choose either plug
Insert the completed hard-wired TRRS plug or the green screw-terminal TRRS plug into the UGREEN adapter.
Red and black leads
Run the 1.5 m red and black silicone leads from the selected plug to the matching clips.
Crocodile clips
Attach the red and black clips to the two field electrodes or ground pins, following the GeoVue field procedure.
Two reliable ways to build the cable pack
Choose between a compact direct-soldered cable and a simpler screw-terminal build. Both options use the UGREEN USB-C audio adapter with a DAC chip.
Direct wiring and soldering
The red and black cables are soldered directly into a 3.5 mm four-pole TRRS plug. This is the compact option, but it is difficult and requires careful soldering.
Screw-in four-pole plug
The red and black cables are secured in a green screw-terminal TRRS plug. This avoids soldering inside the plug and is easier to assemble, inspect and repair.
Hard-wired cable with the UGREEN adapter
Start with the original direct-soldered design. The cable is wired into a 3.5 mm four-pole plug, then connected to the UGREEN USB-C to female 3.5 mm audio adapter.
Buy the UGREEN adapter
Use a UGREEN TRRS USB-C to female 3.5 mm audio adapter. Confirm that the model includes a DAC chip and supports 24-bit/96 kHz audio.
Hard-wired build requirements
- Use 1.5 metres of black 1 mm silicone cable.
- Use 1.5 metres of red 1 mm silicone cable.
- Fit strain relief at the plug and at each clip.
- Use lightweight crocodile clips approximately 10 cm long with a jaw opening of about 3 cm.
- Leave the two upper TRRS contacts unconnected.
- Connect the black and red leads only to the positions shown in the wiring diagram.
Screw-in four-pole plug
This option replaces the difficult soldered plug with a terminal-block TRRS connector. The cable ends are inserted into the correct terminals and tightened with the screws.
Buy the green four-pole screw plug
Use the specified green terminal-block 3.5 mm four-pole plug or an equivalent model with clearly marked L, R, V and ground terminals.
Screw-in cable build
- Prepare 1.5 m red and black silicone leads.
- Attach the matching crocodile clips and fit strain relief.
- Open the green screw-terminal plug.
- Leave L and R unconnected.
- Secure the black lead in V.
- Secure the red lead in the ground terminal.
- Check for loose strands, tighten the screws and close the plug body.
Build for reliability
Small components are easily damaged or misplaced. Good preparation reduces downtime in the field.
Buy spares
Buy two of each important item. Equipment can be broken or lost, so keep a ready-to-use spare.
Choose quality parts
Use good-quality cable, clips, strain relief and connectors that match the specifications shown above.
Verify the adapter
Make sure the UGREEN adapter contains a DAC chip. A passive USB-C adapter may not work correctly.
Test every completed cable
Run both checks before the cable pack is used. Keep the crocodile clips separated during testing.
Voice recorder test
- Connect the cable pack to your phone.
- Open the phone's onboard voice recorder.
- Make sure the clips are not touching.
- Press record and say a few words.
- Stop recording and replay the file.
Bluetooth cancellation test
- Play music from the device through a Bluetooth speaker.
- While the music is playing, plug in the completed cable.
- Observe what happens to the Bluetooth speaker.
Both checks passed?
The cable pack is ready to go when the voice recorder does not capture your speech and inserting the cable cancels Bluetooth speaker playback.
